New Sunday Missal

On 1 December, the First Sunday of Advent, a new English version of the Mass Lectionary will come into official liturgical use across Scotland. The Mass readings remain the same, but their new translation will be based on the English Standard Version Catholic Edition (ESV-CE) and the Abbey Psalms and Canticles (APC). You can pick up a leaflet, “The New Lectionary Explained,” available in our church to learn more about the change.

In practical terms, our current privately owned Sunday and Weekday Missals will become largely obsolete. However, we have recently received an offer from Hodder & Stoughton publisher for the New Translation Sunday Missal. See details below; there’s also a sample for your inspection available in our church. While an individual copy costs £18.99, we can reduce the cost to £13 per copy by bulk buying as the parish. If you’d like to get a copy (or more), please put your name on a physical list in the church or fill in the form at the bottom of this post.

Hodder & Stoughton is delighted to announce the publication in November 2024 of The Hodder Sunday Missal, published on 21 November 2024.

Designed with ease of use in mind, it is perfect for people newly received into the Church as well as seasoned missal-users. We are keen, in fact, to take the opportunity to encourage more Catholics than ever to use a Missal in the hope it encourages a deeper engagement with scripture and to live what the liturgy celebrates. Each Mass has short, insightful introductions that can be read in less than one minute and are drawn from many different parts of our Catholic community.

The Order of Mass is cleanly presented in English only, with no music lines (the key chants and Latin texts are found in an appendix). The Propers are organised in such a way as to preserve the integrity of the liturgical year to aid a greater understanding of the ‘shape’ of the Christian journey.

We have also included a range of extra devotional material in the hope the Missal will become a spiritual companion throughout the week; a Rosary and Stations of the Cross are included, alongside an introduction to personal prayer, a short form of Morning and Night Prayer to memorise, a Stations of the Resurrection, Prayers to Our Lady, and much more. There are also catechetical pieces about the Divine Office, our role in evangelisation, an introduction to the Creed and the Sacraments, including a guide to Confession, and much more.
